Today, I was having lunch with a young friend of mine who works in IT for a bank and who, quite surprisingly, is still not 100% sure what she wants to do with the rest of her life. To be clear, I have nothing against IT — this is how I make a living — or banking — this is how millions make a living, and it’s kinda useful — but I do not assume that it is for everybody. The same way surfing is not for me, sorry: I can take the sand, I can take the wind, but the whole idea of standing on a piece of plastic on the ocean (when you’re lucky) just sounds pretty unsustainable to me.
The point is: do what you love, as a great musician once sang (spoiler: I know him). And, if you don’t know what you love, start a blog in the meantime. This is what I say to everybody, usually multiple times, until they a) become angry at me and start yelling back (it happens), b) get bored and stop talking to me altogether (it happens a lot), c) start writing a blog (it happened once and I’m getting married to her this weekend). Given such odds, I tried again with my friend today. Truth be told, I’d probably already asked (I have done so with everyone I spent more than 15 minutes with, my way of honouring Warhol’s legacy), but I’d clearly not been convincing enough. Or annoying enough. Or both.
Me: Just start a blog, it will help you formalize things.
Friend: I don’t want to.
Me: Do it anyway. You’ll see, it will help.
Friend: Help with what?
Me: Everything, work, work/life balance, your overall state of mind…
Friend: But what would I write about?
Me: The thing you most feel like writing about…
Friend: I don’t want it to be personal.
Friend: I don’t want to talk about myself.
Me: You don’t have to. I just started a new project and it doesn’t even have my name on it… [for a change…]
Friend: Let me see that… OK, but you still give out your opinion on there!
Me: Right… Well, if you don’t to give anything away, you can always write about the weather…
Friend: But I don’t care about the weather…
Me: What do you care about, then?
Friend: I don’t know yet…
Me: Then start writing.
